Virtual Testing Series

Virtual Testing #4: Applications, Methods and Processes

The event Applications and Methods in Virtual Development is the starting point for a new series on virtual development in the year 2025. Today, the first tests in the area of consumer protection testing can be conducted virtually. Legal requirements such as UN R157 at least mention this possibility.

The event Applications and Methods in Virtual Development will discuss the basic approach of virtual testing and challenges in the process. Validation is central to ensuring that virtual methods produce correct results. But how does validation work, when is a model well validated? How do you ensure that simulation models deliver accurate results at operating points that cannot be represented in the real test? What methods are required by legal requirements in order to approve vehicles in the future? Are these comparable with consumer protection testing requirements? How are large data sets managed, how are IT systems processes mapped?

Andre Eggers is a researcher at BASt (German Federal Highway Research Institute) since 2006 working in the area of biomechanics, evaluation of dummies, human models and virtual testing. He studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Hamburg and Biomedical Engineering at Wayne State University. 2013 he completed his doctorate at the Technical University of Berlin. He contributed to several European research projects like IMVITER, THORAX, ASSESS, SENIORS and OSCCAR. He is representing BASt in Euro NCAP working groups related to injury criteria and virtual testing.

Virtual testing for vehicle approval for active and
passive safety - what is the current status?

  • Basics of Virtual Testing
  • Which procedures are accepted for homologation?
  • Which test cases are assessed (or needed as preparation) based on virtual tests in consumer protection?
  • Which are under discussion?
  • What is legislative activity in this area?
