Survey Identifies the Current, Critical Challenges of automotive CAE - Call for Papers for the automotive CAE Grand Challenge 2024In preparation for the conference, we conducted a survey among the CAE experts of the international automotive industry in order to identify the current critical challenges in automotive CAE. At the conference one session will be dedicated to each of the 7 most critical challenges, the so-called "Grand Challenges". read more ... Seminar: Material Models of Metals for Crash SimulationIn addition to the appropriate discretization of the body structure and knowledge about the required load cases, the correct material description is an essential component of meaningful crash simulations. The aim of the 1-day seminar is to give participants an overview of material models of metallic materials for crash simulation. Dr. Helmut Gese founded the engineering company MATFEM in 1993. He is a well-known expert in material modeling. read more ... Developing Optimal Foam Components Through SimulationFoams are ideal thermal or acoustic insulating materials and a good substitute for composite materials. They are therefore not only found in seats, but are also used as shock absorbers or for sound and heat insulation. The properties of the foams essentially determine the functionality of the applications. It is therefore important to be able to take a look inside the foam during production.

ASAM Announces the Release of ASAM OpenDRIVEThe ASAM OpenDRIVE format provides a common base for describing road networks with extensible markup language (XML) syntax, using the file extension xodr. The data that is stored in an ASAM OpenDRIVE file describes the geometry of roads, lanes and objects, such as road marks on the road, as well as features along the roads, like signals. The road networks that are described in the ASAM OpenDRIVE file can either be synthetic or based on real data. The download of the standard ASAM OpenDRIVE is free of charge.

Predicting Thermal Runaway Propagation in Renault's Pouch Cell Battery PackTesting multiple battery pack designs and configurations to improve efficiency without compromising on safety means manufacturers are spending large sums of money, especially to study thermal runaway. To ease the financial burden, Renault Group took advantage of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations in CONVERGE to predict the propagation of thermal runaway, allowing them to reduce the overall design cost of their battery packs.

German Industry & Research Propose a New Development Standard for Safe Automated DrivingIn order for automated systems and vehicles to be approved for road use, the safety standard must be technically proven. The German automotive industry has joined forces with 21 partners from industry, research institutions and testing bodies in the joint project Verification and Validation Methods (VVM) and developed the world's first structures to make these safety standards verifiable for automated vehicles in an urban environment.

But automobiles emit other potentially polluting particles coming from brake and tire wear, and road abrasion. Engineers at MANN+HUMMEL, located in Ludwigsburg, Germany, are using Ansys Fluent to simulate the flow of metal particles as they leave the brakes. The goal is to design a passive filter (i.e., no moving parts) that fits onto the brake calipers to capture these particles before they exit into the surroundings.

For the reliable design of such systems, development and construction depend on precise calculation methods. However, conventional calculation approaches fail when it comes to so-called boundary lubrication. Prof. Michael Moseler and Dr. Kerstin Falk from the Fraunhofer Institute for Mechanics of Materials IWM in Freiburg have succeeded in clarifying the mechanisms of boundary lubrication and making them predictable.
