Seminar: Virtual Testing for Vehicle Safety Assessment in Consumer Protection Tests and Regulations

article imageVehicle type approval based on virtual test procedures has been possible for some time for a limited number of specific regulations in automotive safety. However, there have been very few real applications so far. Currently the increasing demands of consumer protection organizations are leading to a noticeable acceleration in the development and acceptance of procedures for virtual testing as an alternative or supplement to physical testing. There are also corresponding efforts by legislators to implement virtual test procedures in new regulations for the assessment of vehicle safety. The trainer Andre Eggers has been a research associate at the German Federal Highway Research Institute since 2006 and works in the fields of biomechanics, evaluation of dummies, human models and virtual testing.

TEC|MAP: New Methods to Integrate Imperfections in Simulation Models

article imageMost finite element simulation models represent the ideal state of a structure. However, in real life, deviations during manufacture or operation can cause imperfections which have an impact on a structure's behavior. It is important to include and evaluate the effects of these imperfections. TECOSIM developed a process that allows automatic updating of finite element simulation models based on image data as part of the Add2Reliablade research project funded by the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action.

SAFECAR-ML - Semantic Change Description for Vehicle Development with ML-based Automatic Classification

article imageToday, most crash tests to evaluate vehicle safety are conducted virtually. Documenting the changes to the simulated vehicle models is particularly time-consuming and costly. The SAFECAR-ML project aims to simplify this process. By combining novel methods of artificial intelligence (AI) with technical knowledge from vehicle development, the project partners from Fraunhofer SCAI and the automotive industry want to standardize the processing of information for the documentation of virtual crash tests.

CADFEM: Who's Afraid of the Square Tetrahedron? Meshing Strategies for Explicit Simulations

article imageUsing a drop-test simulation, CADFEM wants to show that it is not always necessary to defeature the CAD model in a time-consuming manner, because Ansys offers efficient meshing strategies for explicit simulations. Although often frowned upon for historical reasons, tetrahedron elements and in particular quadratic tetrahedron elements can be the solution for thin-walled, complex components.

Hybrid Solvers: Optimized Simulations of Complex Paint Shop Processes

article imageAutomotive paint shop processes aren't straightforward. Replicating them accurately requires to develop a model, understand the environment, assume the movement and understand the controlling forces and interdependent elements. The efficiency of a process often depends on various factors like - airflow, droplet motion, and the behavior of paint settling on surfaces. Using a single solver to model such a process accurately is nearly impossible. That's why hybridization, the coupling of multiple solvers, is so important.
