 Pedestrian Safety: Robotic Eyes on AV'sRobotic eyes on autonomous vehicles could improve pedestrian safety, according to a new study at the University of Tokyo. Participants played out scenarios in virtual reality (VR) and had to decide whether to cross a road in front of a moving vehicle or not. When that vehicle was fitted with robotic eyes, which either looked at the pedestrian (registering their presence) or away (not registering them), the participants were able to make safer or more efficient choices.

The next step-change in vehicle safety rating criteria will take effect from next year as ANCAP broadens its test and rating criteria. From January 2023 ANCAP, which shares common test and rating protocols with its European counterpart Euro NCAP, will expand its criteria by adding new and updated tests and assessments to its star rating regime to incentivise a continued high level of safety offered to Australian, New Zealand and European car buyers.
On October 5, the NTSB will present Advancing Pedestrian Safety Through a Safe System Approach, a roundtable moderated by NTSB Member Tom Chapman. In this roundtable, they will discuss the state of pedestrian safety; planning for a Safe System; and ideas for improving pedestrian safety through inclusive road infrastructure, vehicle design and safety technology, and the policy changes needed to implement a proactive, integrative, and shared responsibility approach to safety.
