Euro NCAP has published several updated protocols and the 
Front crash prevention systems aren't as good at preventing crashes with large trucks and motorcycles as they are crashes with cars, two new studies from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety show.
Most front crash prevention systems include forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking (AEB). Forward collision warning alerts the driver when a rear-end crash is imminent, and AEB automatically slams on the brakes if the driver fails to respond in time.
NXP Semiconductors announced the TrimensionTM NCJ29D6, a fully integrated automotive single-chip Ultra-Wideband (UWB) family combining next-generation secure and precise real-time localization with short-range radar to address multiple use cases with a single system, including secure car access, child presence detection, intrusion alert, gesture recognition and more.
All 20 participating automakers have fulfilled a voluntary pledge to equip nearly all the light vehicles they produce for the U.S. market with automatic emergency braking (AEB). Five new manufacturers installed AEB on more than 95 percent of the light vehicles they produced between Sept. 1, 2022, and Aug. 31, 2023, to meet the deadline set in the agreement.
At its Next Generation Mobility Day in Shanghai, ZF presents a new, purely electro-mechanical brake system for the first time. Braking force is generated at each wheel by an electric motor, i.e. without a hydraulic system and brake fluid. The brake system was developed at ZF's development centers in China, the USA, and Germany for the global market.
AB Dynamics has launched its new GTC Remote to streamline ADAS testing. The hand-held device enables test operators to control single ADAS platforms, including its ranges of GST and LaunchPads, without the requirement for a static base station to improve the efficiency of setting up tests.
Vector Informatik presents Release 8 of DYNA4, the simulation software for virtual test driving. The focus is on the new scenario engine, which now natively supports the ASAM standard OpenSCENARIO 1.2 as input format for the description of complex test drive scenarios. Thus, DYNA4 offers scenario-based testing of vehicle control functions with seamless integration of the ASAM standards OpenSCENARIO, OpenDRIVE and OSI.
From 2025 on, the technology company Continental will equip several million vehicles of a major European automobile manufacturer with the eHorizon for Dynamic Road Events. While connected eHorizon has been in successful use by a major Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) since 2022, this latest version of the eHorizon platform enhances road safety for car drivers by offering real-time insights into road events and potential hazards.
Opsys' SP3.0 LiDAR integrated windshield design, developed in collaboration with Wideye by AGC, will be available for the market in 2024. Advanced engineering establishes the basis for a design suitable for windshield application, which is the optimal location for enabling LiDAR in a vehicle. The setup integrates high- and low-resolution sensors to support long and short-range detection for Highway Pilot and high levels of autonomous driving (AD).
MAHLE Powertrain has opened a new state-of-the-art battery development center in Stuttgart, Germany, specifically to cater for the needs of its European clients. The facility spans over 1,300 m2 and it can accommodate all aspects of battery development, from initial prototyping through to small-scale production, with a breadth of capability that covers applications from small e-bikes to large electric trucks.
NODAR announced a new capability within their Hammerhead product line called GridDetect, which offers long-range object detection and tracking for ADAS and AVs. Combined with Hammerhead's ultra long-range high-resolution sensing capabilities, the product is now able to detect and track objects as far away as 350 meters and as small as 10 centimeters in height in real time.
The end of 2023 marked the end of the National Transportation Safety Board's Most Wanted List of Transportation Safety Improvements, the focus of the agency's safety advocacy efforts for nearly 35 years. "The Most Wanted List has served the NTSB well as an advocacy tool, especially in the days before social media, but our advocacy efforts must advance," said NTSB Chair Jennifer Homendy.
