 ZF LIFETEC develops Airbag for advanced Automated DrivingWhen automated driving becomes a reality, drivers will have flexible seating position options. To provide the best possible protection in the event of a crash, even in comfortable seating positions, new airbag concepts are required that adapt their depth of effect to the respective seating position. ZF LIFETEC has developed a dual contour airbag for the passenger side, which can be inflated in two different sizes, depending on the seating position. ZF LIFETEC is also developing a dual contour airbag for the driver's side for the next generation of partially or fully automated vehicles.

BMW is the first carmaker in the world to receive approval for a combination of a Level 2 driving assistance system (the BMW Highway Assistant) and a Level 3 system in the form of the BMW Personal Pilot L3 in the same vehicle. The new BMW 7 Series therefore sets a milestone in the field of automated driving by offering a unique opportunity to enjoy the benefits of both systems in the same car.
On World Motorcycle Day, June 21, Autoliv and the UN Road Safety Fund (UNRSF) announced the renewal of their collaboration to enhance motorcycle safety globally. The collaboration supports UN Sustainable Development Goal 3.6 which aims to reduce road traffic fatalities and injuries by 2030, and Autoliv's goal of saving 100,000 lives annually.
When it comes to vehicle size and shape, it s long been known that SUVs, pickups, and light vans are more likely to kill or seriously injure pedestrians and cyclists when involved in a crash compared with sedans. SUVs have taken over U.S. roads, climbing from 24 % of registered vehicles in 2013 to 36 % in 2023. Recent research from IIHS demonstrates that the height and shape of their front ends is part of what makes them dangerous.
As automated driving systems (ADS) become more prevalent, drivers will eventually transition into being passengers more and more often, making them more prone to motion sickness. TNO has a lengthy track record of researching motion sickness and is working with industry partners to gain insights into and develop solutions for this issue to benefit the development of self-driving vehicles.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration named 13 members to its newly established Motorcyclist Advisory Council, which will advise the Department on key motorcycle safety issues. NHTSA estimates that motorcycle fatalities increased 2 % in 2023, up from the 6,218 motorcyclists killed in crashes in 2022.
