ZF LIFETEC develops Airbag for advanced Automated Driving

When automated driving becomes a reality, drivers will have flexible seating position options. To provide the best possible protection in the event of a crash, even in comfortable seating positions, new airbag concepts are required that adapt their depth of effect to the respective seating position. ZF LIFETEC has developed a dual contour airbag for the passenger side, which can be inflated in two different sizes, depending on the seating position. ZF LIFETEC is also developing a dual contour airbag for the driver's side for the next generation of partially or fully automated vehicles.

Designing Vehicles for Pedestrian Safety

article imageWhen it comes to vehicle size and shape, it s long been known that SUVs, pickups, and light vans are more likely to kill or seriously injure pedestrians and cyclists when involved in a crash compared with sedans. SUVs have taken over U.S. roads, climbing from 24 % of registered vehicles in 2013 to 36 % in 2023. Recent research from IIHS demonstrates that the height and shape of their front ends is part of what makes them dangerous.

Two IIHS studies investigating the association between passenger vehicle front-end profiles and pedestrian injury severity in motor vehicle crashes will be presented at the PraxisConference Pedestrian Protection on July 3 - 4.

Joint Research on Motion Sickness essential for Autonomous Vehicle Acceptance

article imageAs automated driving systems (ADS) become more prevalent, drivers will eventually transition into being passengers more and more often, making them more prone to motion sickness. TNO has a lengthy track record of researching motion sickness and is working with industry partners to gain insights into and develop solutions for this issue to benefit the development of self-driving vehicles.

TTI advances Research on EV Safety and Roadway Infrastructure

article imageAs the adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) accelerates, the Texas A&M Transportation Institute (TTI) is leading the charge in safety innovation. Roadway departure crashes, responsible for approximately one-half of all roadway fatalities, demand more attention. Understanding how traditional guardrail responds to EV impacts is just one crucial component for promoting roadway safety today and in the future.
