 New Side Airbag from ZF LIFETEC can increase the Crumple Zone in the Passenger CompartmentA two-stage side airbag from ZF LIFETEC uses the milliseconds before an unavoidable crash to build up valuable distance and better protect the occupants. The Pre-Crash Dual Stage Side Airbag (Dual Stage SAB) triggers its first stage around 200 milliseconds before the collision and pushes the occupants a few centimeters into the vehicle interior, away from the expected impact point. Thanks to this gain in space, the actual side airbag with the second stage can develop its full protective effect during the collision.

Euro NCAP releases safety ratings for a range of new, but familiar branded cars entering the European market. The Dacia Duster and Suzuki Swift score three stars whilst, the Mercedes-Benz E-Class, the VW Passat and its twin the koda Superb, and the koda Kodiaq, all achieve Euro NCAP's top 5-star award. BMW's X2 and Renault's Espace and Rafale are rated as 5-star twins to 2022-tested cars.
Crash records and insurance data offer little evidence that partial automation systems are preventing collisions, research from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the Highway Loss Data Institute shows. "Everything we're seeing tells us that partial automation is a convenience feature like power windows or heated seats rather than a safety technology," IIHS President David Harkey said.

The European Union's 'New Vehicle General Safety Regulation', also known as GSR2 or Regulation (EU) 2019/2144, came into effect across Europe on Sunday 7 July 2024. It amends the minimum performance standards (known as type approval) for motor vehicles in the EU, adding new required Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. These include ISA, AEB, DDAW and ELKS.

On June 1, Professor Sanaz Mostaghim took over as the new institute director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems IVI. In this role, she is working together with Professor Matthias Klingner, the institute s longstanding director, who will stay on as executive director until the end of the year.
